A New Approach to Homework                                                                                         August 25, 2025

Dear Panther Families,

As we begin the new school year, we are excited to share an important change to our homework approach for all K-5 students. Our decision is based on research and data that show traditional, nightly homework at the elementary level offers limited, if any, academic benefit and can be a significant source of stress for students and families. We are making this shift because we are committed to doing what is best for our students’ achievement and overall well-being.

Our New Homework Plan

Moving forward, we will no longer be assigning traditional, mandatory homework. Instead, our new approach will be centered on providing optional SEL-focused Choice Boards. These boards are not a nightly requirement, but a resource for students and families to use as they choose. The activities are designed to promote joy, connection, and engagement, including things like:

  • Reading for pleasure
  • Journaling or reflection
  • Helping with a family task or chore
  • Going for a walk or outdoor exploration
  • Creating something new
  • Helping a neighbour

The one exception to this new approach is unfinished classwork. If a student does not complete an assignment during the school day, it can be sent home to be finished instead of using recess time. Beyond this, your evenings are intended for rest, connection, and exploration.

We will continue to have high academic expectations for our students, and we expect them to work hard during instructional hours. This change aligns with both current research and best practices, and we believe it will help create a healthier, more balanced environment for our students and their families.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Warm regards,

Melissa Savoie(she/her)
